What do Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Pierre-Paul Prud'hon have in common?

The answer is the muscles in the torso. Here are some quick colored pencil traces and drawings of some torso muscles.

Spring Break with crayons

I guess this is what happens on spring break when you give a doodler some crayons at a sweet fish sandwich place.

Here is the ridiculous crayon drawing.

And if you look to the left, there is a kind of gesture drawing...

Prud'hon drawing empirical measurements

This is a drawing by the Romanticism era painter Prud'hon. It is drawn on a blueish paper with some chalk and charcoal. I believe it is a study for a future painting he was working on.

Here is the original drawing.

And this is my study of it, including (from L to R) Key marks and measurements, a quick gesture, the original with measurements/plumb lines/ and angle dropping, and the last is a little bit longer gesture.

Gesture Drawings

Hi,

This is my first blog post for Mike Nichols Drawing 340.

Here are a two examples of some gesture drawings gathered from around the internet.

And here are two of my own gestures from the first two days of Drawing 340.

And finally here is a work by Jackson Pollock called Untitled 1948-49. This is a gesture of sorts where Pollock used his famous drip/pour technique to achieve a flowing, undulating figure that is expressed in a thin seemingly continuous line.
